Hon Thom Departure Terminal - Phu Quoc

The journey starts at the southern tip of Phu Quoc island in An Thoi at the Hon Thom Departure Terminal.

The cable car travels from Phu Quoc, over two islands arriving at Hon Thom or Thom Island.

If you are just going for the cable car ride, it'll take about half a day, including your trip to and from the Hon Thom Departure Terminal.

Getting There

If you are staying in the north, there are a few ways options on how to get to the Phu Quoc cable car.

  1. If you have a bike license, you can hire a scooter and follow Google Maps directions for Hon Thom Departure Terminal.
  2. Taxis are plentiful on the island with options for 4 and 7 seaters on Grab. There are plenty of taxis in the street if you prefer not to book via the app.
  3. There are also buses and tours which take you to the Hon Thom Departure Terminal.

Hon Thom Departure Terminal Ticket Office

Sunworld has chosen an Italian theme for the Hon Thom Nature Park. The Departure Terminal's facade depicts a Roman coliseum ruin while the surrounding village, which is still under construction (as of March 2020), looks like something out of Tuscany.

The ticket office is rarely busy, and on the three occasions I have visited, I've never had to queue for a ticket. Check Phu Quoc cable car ticket prices here.

Once you have your ticket, you head to the queue for boarding. In peak season, December to February, you might experience a small line to board.

Cable cars arrive every 5 to 10 minutes, with each car holding up to 30 people. So, if there is a queue, it usually moves fairly quickly.

Queues at boarding are usually due to the arrival of a tour bus. If you want to beat the tour buses, I suggest getting to the departure terminal between 8am, and 9am. Most tour buses arrive between 9am to 11am.

Phu Quoc Cable Car Ride

The cable car ride from An Thoi to Hon Thom takes 15 minutes and travels over two islands Hon Dua (Dua Island) and Hon Roi (Roi Island).

The views from the car will leave you in awe.

As you take off, you have An Thoi, Hon Dam Throng (Dam Throng Island), and Hon Dam Ngoai (Dam Ngoai Island) to your left and the vast expanse of the Gulf of Thailand to your right.

You can also see the journey ahead and cars passing from the opposite direction every now and then.

Even after three visits to Hon Thom, I'm still mesmerized by the breathtaking views and scenery.

Arriving at Hon Thom

The first thing you notice as the cable car passes over Hon Thom is the lush tropical jungle covering the island.

Even though the island has been developed, Sunworld has done well to preserve most of Hon Thom's natural beauty.

Just before the cable car is about to enter the terminal, you will also see Aquatopia Water Park with all the massive slides to your right.

As you exit the cable car terminal, several restaurants and cafes are surrounding a pond stocked with beautiful koi fish.

If you only purchased a ticket for the cable car, you can hang out at one of the restaurants or catch a free shuttle to the beach. Access to the beach waterpark is included in your cable car ticket. It's only Aquatopia Water Park, which you have to pay to enter.

Aquatopia Water Park

Aquatopia Water Park is the main attraction on Hon Thom. The impressive complex includes slides, pools, a lazy river, a wave pool, kids pools, and more.

Just walking around the park is an experience. Throughout the park are statues of sea creatures painted in bright colors adding to the fun and excitement, especially for the kids.

Many of the bigger slides allow you up to 4 people on a rubber tube so you can experience the rides with friends and family. There are also single rides and, of course, the high slides for the adrenalin junkies.

You can easily spend at least half a day at Aquatopia Water Park. It's a massive complex with loads to keep young and old entertained.

I was impressed with the slides and the overwhelming number of staff on hand to assist and make sure everyone is safe.

Locker and Towel Rental at Aquatopia Water Park

For an extra cost, you can rent a locker for valuables and towels. You can also buy soap and shampoo for the showers.

(I've provided locker room prices at the end of this article.)

The locker room facilities are cleaned and kept to a high standard. There are plenty of changing rooms, showers, and toilets for guests. Your assigned locker is connected to a wristband you get on entering the park, so you don't have to worry about losing a key!

Sunworld Beach, Hon Thom

Sunworld Beach offers something a little more laid back. If you paid for the buffet lunch, then this is where you will eat too.

There are plenty of shuttles on hand to take you from the cable car terminal to Sunworld Beach. The journey is a little over a kilometer (+- 0.7 miles).

There is a massive green lawn leading down to a small stretch of beach. About 20m (65 feet) from the beach is a gigantic inflatable waterslide with loads to climb, slide or jump off.

Between the palm trees are hammocks for guests to laze in the shade. There are also plenty of loungers if you want to tan or just have a nap.

Buffet Lunch

As the restaurant choices on the island are limited, I highly recommend the buffet lunch. I was pleasantly surprised at what was on offer.

Just about every meal preference is catered for, and there are even plenty of options for vegans.

It's all you can eat, so be careful not to overdo it ;).

Best Time to Visit

If you want to avoid the crowds, its best to get to Hon Thom Departure Terminal when it opens at 08:00 or in the afternoon after 14:00.

Returning from the park is always fairly busy, especially around sunset, when the waterparks close.

Sunset from the cable car is spectacular. If you don't mind a busy car, it's well worth the experience.

Phu Quoc Cable Car Timetable

The cable car runs from 08:00 to 19:00 every day. If you want to confirm this, I suggest checking the Sunworld Hon Thom Nature Park.

It's important to note that the cable car shuts down between 12:30 and 13:30, which means you can't get to or from the island during this time.
